Gino’s East

Chicago-style pizza lovers belong to several few different camps. There are those who love Giordano’s, those who love Lou Malnati’s and then there is Gino’s. All are honestly delicious (and ridiculously filling), but the thing that makes Gino’s the most kid-friendly is the fact that kids are not only invited to, but — in fact — are encouraged to write all over the walls. A new Gino’s East opened on Wells Street, making for a new location for your children to express their graffiti skills while you all munch on a slice of Chicago tradition.

Foodlife at Water Tower Place

Now here’s a dining establishment that will truly make every member of your family happy. Foodlife is still an innovation in dining, despite the fact that it’s been a staple in the upscale Water Tower Place mall for quite some time. You don’t pay for your food as you go. Instead, you have a little card that you tally as you go, with you and your children choosing from different stations across the restaurant, picking from every type of food imaginable. Barbecue? Check. Smoothies? Check. Stir fry? Check. Soup? Check. Excited children? Check. You’ll all leave with full tummies and big smiles.

Eli’s Cheesecake World

As the name would suggest this famed Chicago eatery specializes in the mother of all desserts, but it also features plenty of delicious soups, sandwiches, and salads. No child should leave without sampling the cheesecake, which comes in every variety from the trusty old “”original”” to the “”crazy candy sampler.”” They also have cheesecake shakes, a novel treat your childrens’ parents probably never let them indulge in. There are tours and demonstrations available for anyone curious as to how these desserts get so good.

Ed Debevic’s

You and your children can slide into one of Ed’s plastic, sparkly booths and revel in the eatery’s hallmark “fresh service” provided by some of the city’s sassiest aspiring actors and comedians. This 1950s-inspired menu’s highlights include the Kitchen Sink Nachos smothered in Ed’s award-winning chili and special “atomic mix,” as well as the Blue Moon Burger, topped with Ed’s blue cheese sauce and served with a heaping side of onion straws. Wash down your meal and its cheeky arrival with the Ultimate Black Cow or the World’s Smallest Ice Cream Sundae and let Ed’s rock-and-roll soundtrack serve as the backdrop for a friendly, intergenerational music debate.

Ann Sather

Lovers of sticky buns, take warning! Chicago’s Swedish cuisine restaurant Ann Sather has a requisitely delicious menu of Swedish waffles with lingonberries and whatnot, but remember to save room for its famous cinamon rolls. Delicious and gooey just begins to describe the treats here. Though it’s open for lunch, breakfast is the real meal at chez Sather, so get ready for some meatballs and potato pancakes, not to mention full tummies upon exit.

Chicago Fire Soccer

This less popular, albeit major sport is just as exciting as other ball games, and any children who play on their own soccer team will be thrilled to take in the live action of the big boys doing the same thing. The season really heats up in summer months, and Toyota Park, the stadium they usually play in, is known to sell out quite frequently. Check the website for schedule and ticket information, and bring your littlest hooligans for a memorable sporting experience.

Chicago Cubs Baseball

Begin a tradition with your children that they will honor throughout their lives. Visit the country’s most beautiful ballpark and become a part of national legend. There is nothing better than sitting back amongst throngs of happy-go-lucky fans at Wrigley Field — a park appropriately dubbed “”The Friendly Confines.”” Depending on the season, you might witness the Cubbies’ attempt to break the hundred-year Curse of the Billy Goat (See Billy Goat Tavern in Kid-Friendly Eats). While your child munches on kosher hot dogs and salty peanuts, you might enjoy one of Bob Chinn’s famous Mai Tai cocktails or an Old Style beer as you sing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” in unison.

Chicago Blackhawks Hockey

Chicago Blackhawks Celebrate Win

Hockey is probably one of the most lawless, loudmouth games you can take your children to, but it’s also super fun, and there’s no better team to watch in Chicago than the Blackhawks. If your children have never seen the sport up-close, they’ll be blown away by the giant men gliding around the ice, chasing and hitting the little puck, and of course, breaking into mid-game brawls. They play at United Center, where we urge you to park in the designated legal areas so your evening won’t be spoiled by a tow truck.
