Pittsburgh Symphony

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra has created 22 weeks of classical concerts a year that might appeal to children. But it’s more than that. There is also a Pops series that lasts at least seven weekends, and a program designed especially for you and your children — the Fiddlesticks Family Concert Series.

Prime Stage Theatre

Prime Stage, a nationally recognized theater, is committed to “bringing literature to life” through live on-stage adaptations of favorite books and stories for middle school and high school students and their families. And the company goes a step further and bridges the gap between actor and audience with “chats” and one-on-one interactions with the audience. Education is as important to Prime Stage as the play itself.

Byham Theater

The Byham is edgier than some of the other traditional theaters downtown, but that’s what the Cultural Trust wanted: a place to try new and surprising things. So when your children want to see something special, take them to supper along Sixth Street. Then walk around the corner and see what’s shaking at the Byham. And take a few minutes to marvel at the ornate, rococo decoration, and a lobby that’s worth a long stop-and-stare.

Harris Theater

The Cultural District of Pittsburgh has plenty of live performance venues, but only one movie theater. The Harris began as the city’s first art house back in the day, went through a bad patch when it showed only adult films, but has been a showcase for independent films and art films for a long while now, with one of the coolest marquees and the plushiest seats in town.
